As such, the stigma associated with habitual smoking might make it hard for individuals to use it in their own conjure work without corrupting the energy in some way. This herb was held in highest regard by some Native American groups to the point that it has been considered an entheogen (substance which connects the physical self with God) though it is commonly abused today without the slightest consideration for its sacredness. Mistletoe is also TOXIC so do not breath the smoke and always burn OUTSIDE. Vervain confers blessings and has the virtues of a feminine nature, while mistletoe dispels and conquers and is of a more masculine character. Those who favor European traditions, specifically those of the druids, will use these in similar fashion to those listed above. Cedar is the “Brave Warrior” which defends from and chases off evil, Sage is the “Holy Man” who brings healing and wisdom, Sweetgrass is the “Beloved Woman” and confers blessings of peace, love and harmonious energies. ![]() Native Americans traditionally burned these herbs, either together or separately, in bundles lit at one end and fanned with sacred feathers. Some herbs are burned in bundles and the smoke is fanned about the patient to cleanse, purify and bless them by way of interaction with their energy field and this is called “smudging” and is equally common when working with spaces and objects as with people. Such herbs were more seldom psychotropic than some might think. Other times an herb, or blend of herbs, was smoked as part of a communal ritual to share in a bond between people and Spirit. This is known as “fumigation” and is uncommon anymore, but not unheard of. I have known of some traditional shamans to blow the smoke into or over affected areas of the body to cure them. Most herbs can be burned on charcoal along with specially blended ritual incense to impart their virtues via smoke and aroma. This is the first step to becoming a true hoodoo doctor. Learn to keep an open channel to the Divine and let the hand of the Creator guide you more than your own mind. Rather than tweaking and “improving” formulas based on personal conjecture, take the time to get to know what has already been established and build upon that knowledge when you have sufficiently mastered it. ![]() Not because it is necessarily dangerous (though it certainly can be) but because it is arrogant and a hoodoo worker must be humble. ![]() While some of conjure work is “inspired” or guided by God, it is important to be well grounded in tradition before you start experimenting. Some are traditional formulas dating “back to Moses” as they say. Most of the following are my own formulas which I have used in my personal practice with sufficiently satisfying results. I have a theory that "hoodoo" was at least influenced by, if not stemmed from, our hereditary traditions. Though it is supposed to be about "hoodoo" you will find some differences in what I have written and what is commonly known as "hoodoo" today. "Backwoods Shamanism" is something of a primer to the upcoming book. The next book in the series, "Hillbilly Bones and Backwater Blood" will go into deeper detail about the the North American Maroons from whom I am descended, and our nearly forgotten spiritual traditions. The following formulas, and much more, can be found in my book "Backwoods Shamanism" available on Amazon and Kindle. ![]() IF YOU WANT TO USE THIS OR ANY OTHER INFORMATION FROM MY BLOG IN YOUR OWN PUBLICATION CREDIT ME OR SUFFER LEGAL AND KARMIC CONSEQUENCES!!!
